Buildings and Grounds

Rutherglen PS makes a bold statement along Murray St, with our grand heritage listed building a visual reminder of our school’s long history.  Our original (1873) school building houses students from Year 3-6 in bright and spacious classrooms that undertook a respectful renovation in 2010, restoring original features, while at the same time equipping them for learning in the 21st century.

In 1998 a new office administration building was built that houses the main office, staff-room, resource room, first aid and two small conference rooms.  Also built at the same time was a new art room which sits adjacent to the office building.

In 2012 a modern Building Education Revolution (BER) building was built behind our original school building and is currently home to our Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 students.  This is also used as a multi-purpose space for our fortnightly school assemblies, for visiting shows, speakers and other school-wide events.  The transition of students to the new building enabled the final stage of major works to take place, which saw the complete refurbishment of the older relocatable building into our fully equipped cooking centre and adjoining Outside of School Hours Care (OSHC) facilities.  In 2016 the original old shelter shed was transformed into a sensory room that is utilised by students during both school-time and whilst in OSHC.

Our expansive school grounds at RPS offer a variety of play areas and quiet spaces.  We are proud of our outside environment and are continuously focused on developing and enhancing these spaces to reflect the needs of our students and to provide both attractive and sustainable garden areas. Our grounds consist of sustainable and water wise gardens that have largely been landscaped and planted by the students. Sustaining robust gardens capable of withstanding the rigours of play and exploration and the varied temperatures in our climate is always a challenge and we continue to undertake thoughtful consideration of plant and tree choice to accommodate this.

Students of all ages enjoy accessing the playground equipment which offers challenge and interest for the students to play on and around.  Adjacent to the play equipment, our oval provides a great open space for PE classes and during lunch and recess an area for ball games and team activities.  The synthetic turf field also provides an all year round play space and is utilised heavily for PE lessons, outdoor learning and quieter activities during lunch and recess.  Our iconic BRS – Big Red Shed is a valuable feature of our outdoor space providing a large undercover area that is used in all weather conditions for PE, playtimes, performances and displays, as well as our community who also use it for a range of purposes.

Two outdoor eating areas for Foundation-Year 2 and Year 3-6 are favourite areas for students to continue eating after the inside lunch eating time has finished. These are also a place for quiet games, activities like reading and art and for groups of students to sit and talk; as is our designated quiet area at the front of the school.

Students of different age groups at RPS are not designated specific areas for play, as the space within our grounds allows students of all year levels to have room to take up several play options.  Our school values of respect, responsibility, integrity and empathy guide students in playing safely and happily together.
